Shopify has no built-in spin the wheel, so you add one with an app, your email platform, or an embedded widget. This guide covers all 3 methods, 6 verified apps, how to set prizes and odds, when to show the wheel, the legal basics, and how to turn winners into first orders. I’m Charlie Ngo, Marketing Manager at BOGOS, and I work with Shopify merchants on promotions every day.

TL;DR

  • Shopify has no native spin wheel. Use a spin wheel app, an email platform with a wheel, or an embedded wheel widget.
  • Wisepops’ own research puts the average spin-to-win popup conversion rate at 10.15%, more than double the 4.82% popup average.
  • Every spin should win something. Weight the odds so most spins land on your target discount.
  • Show the wheel after a 20–50 second delay or on exit intent. Keep it small on mobile.
  • Keep the wheel free to spin, with no purchase required, to stay clear of US lottery rules.
  • Judge the wheel by first orders and margin, not by email signups.

1. What is a Shopify spin the wheel popup?

A Shopify spin the wheel popup is a signup form that lets a visitor spin a virtual prize wheel in exchange for an email address or phone number. It is also called a spin to win popup, wheel of fortune popup, or prize wheel.

The flow has 4 steps:

  • The visitor enters an email address or phone number.
  • The visitor clicks the spin button.
  • The wheel stops on one prize slice, such as 10% off or free shipping.
  • The visitor sees a discount code on screen, and often gets the same code by email.

Does Shopify have a built-in spin the wheel?

Shopify has no built-in spin the wheel. Shopify’s free Forms app lets you create popup forms and inline forms only, according to the Shopify Help Center. Neither form type includes a game.

Every method below needs a third-party tool. If you only want a plain email popup, our Shopify pop up guide covers the free Shopify Forms setup.

2. Do spin the wheel popups work?

Spin the wheel popups convert more visitors than plain signup popups. Wisepops’ own research, based on one billion popup displays, shows a 10.15% average conversion rate for spin-to-win popups:

Popup formatAverage conversion rateTop 10% conversion rate
Spin-the-wheel (classic)10.15%30.38%
Seasonal themed game12–15%35%+
Exit-intent spin12–15%30%+
Scratch-to-reveal card8–10%25%+
Pick-a-box mystery7–9%22%+

The average popup converts 4.82% of visitors, and ecommerce popups convert 6.88%, according to the same Wisepops research. A spin wheel converts about twice as many visitors as the average popup.

Omnisend’s own research points the same way. Omnisend says interactive wheels often collect twice as many contacts as static forms.

Real stores see a similar gap. In a Shopify Community thread from September 2026, a merchant reported about 9% signups with a wheel versus about 3.5% with a plain form. The offer was the same in both.

Signups are only the first step. A wheel that grows your list but does not raise your Shopify conversion rate costs you discounts with little return.

Which stores spin wheels suit best

Spin wheels suit stores where shoppers browse and buy on impulse. Privy names these as strong fits:

  • Apparel brands, where shoppers compare and respond to a small nudge
  • Beauty and personal care brands, especially with samples or free gifts as prizes
  • Lower-priced impulse products
  • Seasonal and holiday campaigns, when a game feels festive

Privy names these as weak fits:

  • High-consideration purchases, such as furniture or electronics
  • Luxury brands without a playful tone
  • Brands that need education and trust before the first sale

If your brand is premium, test a scratch card instead. Wisepops says scratch cards feel more premium than a wheel and use the same prize logic.

3. How to add spin the wheel to Shopify

There are 3 ways to add spin the wheel to Shopify: install a spin wheel app, use the wheel inside your email platform, or embed a wheel inside a page.

Method 1: Install a spin wheel app

A spin wheel app is the fastest method, and most apps create the discount codes for you. The right app depends on 3 things: your traffic, your budget, and whether you need an embedded wheel. I checked every listing below on the Shopify App Store in September 2026.

Method 2: Use your email platform’s built-in wheel

Some email platforms include a spin wheel, so you skip a separate app. 3 platforms offer one:

  • Klaviyo. Klaviyo’s sign-up forms include a spin-to-win block. You set the reward for each slice and the chance of landing on it, according to the Klaviyo Help Center. Each wheel form needs at least one email or SMS consent field.
  • Omnisend. Its Wheel of Fortune is an item you can add to any Omnisend popup, and it is available on all Omnisend plans, according to the Omnisend Help Center. It supports 3 to 20 slices.
  • Privy. Privy offers spin-to-win as one of its popup displays, with prizes such as discounts, free shipping, and free items.

Choose your email platform’s wheel over a dedicated app for 3 reasons:

  • One less app. Fewer apps mean fewer scripts on your store and one less bill to pay.
  • Prize data stays in one place. The winner’s prize lands in the same platform that sends your emails. Omnisend, for example, offers a welcome automation preset that only includes people who spun its wheel.
  • No sync to break. A separate app must pass each signup to your email platform. A built-in wheel skips that step.

A dedicated app from Method 1 is the better choice when you want more game types, such as scratch cards or slot machines, or when your email platform has no wheel. Also note that Omnisend does not create discount codes for you. You create each code in Shopify first, then paste it into the matching slice.

Method 3: Embed a wheel inside a page

You can place a wheel inside a page section instead of a popup. This answers a common Shopify Community question from merchants who want the wheel on the homepage, not over it.

2 tools support this:

  • OptinMonster. You can switch a coupon wheel campaign to an inline campaign and place it inside page content, per OptinMonster’s documentation. The wheel requires a Growth subscription.
  • PB: Spin Wheel & Spin to Win. Its App Store listing says you can embed the wheel or show it as a popup.

An embedded wheel interrupts no one. It is also easier to miss, so place it high on the page and link to it from your announcement bar.

4. How to create discount codes for your wheel prizes

Every prize slice needs a working Shopify discount code, or the win fails at checkout. Most spin wheel apps generate unique codes for you. If your tool does not, create the codes in Shopify first. Our guide on how to create a discount code in Shopify walks through each step.

Use 3 settings for every wheel code:

  • Limit to one use per customer. Shopify tracks the customer’s email address or phone number to enforce this limit, according to the Shopify Help Center.
  • An end date. Set it to about 72 hours after the campaign ends.
  • A minimum purchase amount for fixed-dollar prizes. For example, $10 off orders over $50.

Unique codes per winner are safer than one shared code. A shared code like SPIN10 can end up on coupon sites.

5. How to set up prizes and odds

Prize ideas for your wheel

I suggest mixing 3 prize types on your wheel: small discounts, non-cash perks such as free shipping, and 1 rare big prize. A mix like this can help keep your average discount lower than a wheel full of large percentage cuts.

  • Percentage off: 10%, 15%, or 20% off the first order
  • Fixed amount off with a minimum: $10 off orders over $50
  • Free shipping: often cheaper for you than a percentage discount
  • Free gift: a sample or small product, as used in a free gift with purchase campaign
  • Buy one get one: a BOGO offer on a chosen product
  • Early access: first access to a new drop or sale
  • Loyalty points: a points bonus on the first order

If you offer free shipping, check your threshold first. Our guide to free shipping over a set amount shows how to set it in Shopify.

How to set the odds

Set the odds so most spins land on your target discount. Most tools require the win chances to add up to 100%. OptinMonster, for example, will not save a wheel until the total reaches exactly 100%.

Here is a worked example based on a Wisepops suggestion:

SliceWin chance
10% off60%
15% off25%
20% off10%
Free gift5%

Across 100 spins, this wheel gives 60 codes at 10%, 25 at 15%, 10 at 20%, and 5 free gifts. The average discount per spin is 11.75% (6 + 3.75 + 2), plus the cost of 5 gifts.

Run this math before launch. If your margin cannot handle an 11.75% average discount, lower the 20% slice or replace it with free shipping.

Should every spin win?

Every spin should win something. The experts disagree on this, so here is the trade-off.

  • The case for “Sorry” slices. Omnisend’s own setup example includes slices labeled “Sorry.” A losing slice lowers your discount cost.
  • The case against. Wisepops says “try again” slices hurt conversion rates. It advises that every visitor get at least free shipping or 5% off.
  • The middle option. OptinMonster lets you set a slice’s win chance to 0%. The big prize stays visible on the wheel, but no one lands on it.

My recommendation: make every slice a real prize. The visitor gave you an email address. A “Sorry” result after that feels like a bad trade and hurts trust in your brand. If you use a 0% slice, disclose the odds in your rules.

6. When to use a spin the wheel

Use a spin the wheel when you want new visitors to sign up and place a first order. These 6 scenarios fit the format best.

  • Welcoming first-time visitors. A wheel works best as a welcome offer for people who have never bought from you. Popups shown only to new visitors convert at 8.30%, versus 4.60% for popups shown to everyone, according to Wisepops. Hide the wheel from returning customers.
  • Catching visitors who are about to leave. An exit-intent wheel gives leaving visitors one last reason to stay. Wisepops puts exit-intent spins at 12–15% conversion. Our Shopify exit intent popup guide covers the setup.
  • Running a seasonal or holiday sale. A themed wheel feels festive during Black Friday, Christmas, or Valentine’s Day. Wisepops puts seasonal themed games at 12–15% conversion, its highest range. Our Shopify Black Friday ideas cover more seasonal offers.
  • Building a list before a launch or big sale. Run the wheel in the weeks before a new collection or sale, and add “early access” as a prize. Privy notes that seasonal collections and limited drops are where the format performs best.
  • Restarting list growth after a slow period. Klaviyo suggests a spin-to-win form when subscriber growth slows after the holiday rush, with prizes such as unique discounts, a gift with purchase, or free shipping.
  • Growing your SMS list. Target the wheel at people who already get your emails but not your texts. Klaviyo recommends a gamified format for SMS-only sign-up forms aimed at existing email subscribers.

Skip the wheel if your store sells high-consideration or luxury products. The section on which stores spin wheels suit best above explains why.

How to keep the wheel mobile-friendly and SEO-safe

A full-screen wheel on mobile can hurt your Google rankings. On August 23, 2016, Google Search Central announced that after January 10, 2017, pages whose content is hard to reach from mobile search may not rank as highly.

Google named 2 problem patterns:

  • A popup that covers the main content right after a visitor arrives from search, or while they read the page
  • A standalone interstitial that the visitor must close before seeing the content

Google also said banners that use a reasonable amount of screen space and are easy to dismiss are fine. Follow 3 rules on mobile:

  • Show a small teaser tab first, and open the full wheel only when the visitor taps it.
  • Use a delay or scroll trigger, never an instant popup.
  • Make the close button large and easy to see.

7. What to do after the spin

The wheel only pays off when winners place an order. Most competitors stop at “the visitor gets a code.” These 5 steps turn a code into a sale.

  • Show the code on screen and send it by email. A visitor who sees the code can use it right away. The email is the backup for anyone who leaves.
  • Set a short expiry and send a reminder. A 48–72 hour expiry gives the winner a clear reason to buy now. Send one email or text reminder before the code expires. If you collect phone numbers, our Shopify SMS marketing guide covers consent rules.
  • Sync the wheel with your welcome flow. Tag wheel signups so your first email repeats their exact prize. A generic welcome email wastes the moment. Our newsletter popup guide covers welcome flow basics.
  • Deliver free gift prizes without a code. A “free gift” slice needs a way to put the gift in the cart. A discount code alone often cannot do this. BOGOS offers a specific link sub-condition that gives a gift only to customers who arrive through a unique link, per the BOGOS documentation. You can also limit the offer to one use per customer. Some wheel tools can redirect winners to a URL after the spin. OptinMonster supports this, for example. Point the gift slice at that link, and add a minimum spend, so the gift reaches the cart only for real orders. Check that your wheel app supports redirect URLs before you build this setup.

BOGOS offers a specific link sub-condition that gives a gift only to customers who arrive through a unique link from a spin-the-wheel popup.
  • Show winners how close they are to the next reward. A winner already plans to buy, so this is the best moment to raise the order size. A cart progress bar in BOGOS shows shoppers how much more they need to spend to unlock a reward, such as free shipping or a gift. A shopper with a 10% code and a $60 cart may add one more item to reach a $75 threshold. This is one of the simplest ways to lift average order value from wheel traffic.

8. How to measure your spin wheel results

Judge the wheel by orders and margin, not by signups. Track these 6 numbers each week:

  • Signup rate: signups divided by wheel views
  • Redemption rate: codes used divided by codes given out
  • First-order rate: wheel signups who buy within 30 days
  • Average order value of wheel orders: compared with your store average
  • Average discount cost: total discount given divided by wheel orders
  • Unsubscribe rate: wheel signups who leave your list within 30 days

A high signup rate with a low redemption rate means the prizes are weak or the codes are hard to use. A high unsubscribe rate means people wanted the discount, not your emails. Fix the weakest number first. For more ways to grow revenue from new visitors, see our guide on how to increase sales on Shopify.

9. Common spin wheel mistakes to avoid

  • Showing the wheel on arrival. Visitors do not know your products yet. Wait 20–50 seconds. Wisepops found this delay cut bounce rates by up to 45% among engaged visitors and raised email capture by 20–43% in top tests. Popups shown within 5 seconds raised bounce rates by up to 5x, per Wisepops.
  • Adding “Sorry” or “Try again” slices. The visitor gave you an email address and got nothing back.
  • Using codes that fail at checkout. Test every slice’s code before launch.
  • Offering discounts deeper than your margin allows. Run the average discount math first.
  • Showing the same wheel on every visit. Show the wheel once every 3–5 days at most, as Wisepops recommends, and hide it for good after a visitor spins.
  • Using a casino look. Match your brand fonts and colors. Privy warns that shoppers notice when a wheel looks like it belongs in a casino.
  • Skipping the follow-up email. Many winners leave before using the code. The email brings them back.

A spin the wheel is a game of chance, so US sweepstakes rules can apply. This section is general information, not legal advice.

US law treats a promotion as a lottery when it has 3 elements: a prize, chance, and consideration. Consideration means something of value paid to enter, such as a purchase. Private companies generally cannot run lotteries. Federal law, 39 U.S.C. § 3001(k), defines a sweepstakes as a game of chance with no consideration required to enter.

A spin wheel always has a prize and chance. So the key is to remove consideration. One open question is whether requiring an email signup counts as consideration. One advertising law firm raises this question without a settled answer.

Follow 4 practical steps:

  • Keep the wheel free to spin, with no purchase required.
  • Publish short rules that cover eligibility, the entry period, the odds, and how to claim a prize.
  • Keep the displayed odds honest. If a slice has a 0% chance, say so in the rules.
  • Talk to a lawyer before offering a high-value prize or running a national campaign.

Conclusion

A Shopify spin the wheel works best as a short, well-timed campaign with real prizes. Pick one of the 3 methods: an app, your email platform’s wheel, or an embedded wheel. Make every slice a real prize, weight the odds to protect your margin, and show the wheel after a delay.

Most of the value comes after the spin. Send the code by email, set a short expiry, and give winners a reason to add one more item. Judge your Shopify spin the wheel by first orders and margin, not by how many emails it collects.

FAQs

Can I add a spin the wheel to Shopify without an app?

You can add a spin the wheel without an app only through custom theme code. Custom code needs a developer. You still need a way to capture emails, create unique codes, and stop repeat spins, which apps handle for you. For most stores, a free app plan is faster and cheaper.

How often should the same visitor see the wheel?

The same visitor should see the wheel once every 3–5 days at most, and never again after spinning. Wisepops recommends this frequency to avoid fatigue. Most apps let you set the frequency in the display settings.

Can customers spin the wheel more than once?

Most tools stop repeat spins with browser cookies and email checks. Wisepops, for example, uses both to allow one spin per visitor. Add Shopify’s one-use-per-customer limit on each code as a second layer of protection.
